»The movement of ›Solidarność‹ seemed to Beuys to be the ideal realisation of his concept of ›social sculpture‹, whose material for him was human action and its influence on the functioning and shape of the human community.« Maciej Cholewiński, 2021

In August 1981, Joseph Beuys set off with his family from Düsseldorf to Łódź. On the roof of his caravan, in a wooden chest, he transported a donation in the form of more than 700 drawings, objects, documentation and archive materials relating to his previous work, to which 13 graphics were added after arrival - sketches from the action of the chest.
Beuys called this action " Polentransport 1981". He was thus continuing the history of the art museum in Łódź, which had maintained a close connection to avant-garde art since its founding in 1930. The heart of the museum was the International Collection of Modern Art of the "a.r." group, the first part of which was officially handed over to the museum on 15 February 1931.
Joseph Beuys' donation of August 1981 is an important part of the collections of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź in the field of 20th and 21st century modern art. It fits perfectly with the history and philosophy of an institution whose work began in exactly this way, with a donation from artists. This first gesture, later repeated by other artists and collectors, was to change the face of the city - through the power of ideas, through the power of images as a free expression of thought.
